EvergladesFOCAL SPECIES: Florida Box Turtle (Terrapene bauri)
The Everglades of South Florida encompass one of the largest wilderness ecosystems in eastern North America, and adjacent coastal areas support than 75% of the mangrove ecosystems in Florida. In the northern Everglades, where sawgrass marshes grade into red mangrove-dominated estuaries, we have established four long-term reference sites for Florida Box Turtle (Terrapene bauri). This project began in 2006, and is conducted in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, and the National Park Service (Everglades National Park). |
